Learn where to store your belongings properly when selling your home for a spacious and clutter-free look, such as storage units.

Where should you hide all your belongings when it’s time to list your home for sale? One of the biggest dilemmas home sellers face is figuring out what to do with all their stuff. Your home is full of memories, knick-knacks, and things you’ve collected over the years. But when it’s time to sell, less is more.

Here are three simple ways to hide your things and make your home look neat for potential buyers:

1. Rent a storage unit. Many people overlook this option because they think it’ll be too expensive. But guess what? You can rent a small storage unit for as little as $75 a month, and That’s a pretty good deal. Here’s the plan: Pack up all the stuff you don’t use daily and move it into the storage unit. Keep it there until your home sells and you’re ready to unpack in your new place. This way, your house will feel spacious and inviting, which buyers want.

2. Use your garage. If renting a storage unit is not an option, use your garage instead. If you’re worried that a full garage could deter buyers, it's better than storing things inside your house. Most buyers have a clear idea of garage sizes. For instance, if you have a two-car garage, they'll expect it to hold two cars, even if some boxes are inside. Just keep the boxes neat and organized. Opt for plastic totes over messy cardboard boxes to maintain a tidy appearance.

"Decluttering helps buyers envision the space as their own."

3. Tuck things away in closets. If you want to store your stuff in closets, avoid using the master closet. Buyers are particularly curious about the master closet because it’s a space they’ll use daily. You want that area to feel spacious, organized, and clutter-free. Instead, use closets in spare bedrooms, kids' rooms, or hallways. Buyers may peek inside, but they won't scrutinize them as closely. Just keep these closets tidy and avoid overstuffing them to stay organized.

Remember: When buyers walk into your home, it should feel like a lightly used, almost new space with plenty of room. Clutter can make rooms appear smaller and distract from the home’s true potential, but by neatly storing your belongings, you help buyers envision their own lives in the space.
