Shift negative thought patterns into a more positive one to overcome challenges in your real estate business.

What if I told you that the biggest obstacle in your real estate career isn’t the market… but your mindset? For the past couple of months, our team has been talking about the importance of mindset when starting a real estate business. 

Like any field, success depends on three key elements: skill set, mindset, and effort. But more than that, I also want to share a helpful tactic focused specifically on mindset, which involves understanding the six-step cycle we experience whenever something happens in our lives. Here’s how it works:

1. Something happens in our life.
2. We react or have an emotional response.
3. We form a judgment about the situation.
4. We create a story about what this means.
5. We look for proof to support our story.
6. We fulfill our prophecy.

This cycle keeps repeating itself. The stories we tell ourselves shape our feelings, actions, and, ultimately, the outcomes we experience. Once you believe a story, your brain starts seeking evidence to back it up. If you can find proof for any narrative you create, why not choose a positive one?

“Pay attention to the stories you’re telling yourself. If they’re negative, change them.”

For example, the other day, I spent hours making phone calls, but no one picked up. The story I started telling myself was, “Today’s a bad day for calls. Nobody wants to talk to me.” Because I believed that story, I didn’t make any more calls.

Compare that to what could have happened if I changed the story. For instance: “This is a bit challenging. Let me switch tactics. There must be a better way to communicate today.” By changing my mindset, I would have found new ways to connect with people and gathered evidence to support a more hopeful story.

In your business and life, pay attention to the stories you tell yourself. If they’re negative, change them. You’ll be surprised at how much your mindset influences your actions and the outcomes you achieve. Focus on your mindset and the stories you create, and watch how they transform your real estate journey.
