Chirping birds? Sunshine into the evening? That extra pep in your step? All those things must mean one thing: IT’S SPRING! And with spring here, it’s time to make a plan to get your home ready for the summer. That way, you can spend all those summer moments enjoying them, instead of checking even more of these things off of your home’s maintenance checklist. Check out a few of these spring maintenance items to get a jump start on enjoying your home in this warmer weather.
Interior Spring Maintenance To Do’s:
- Change HVAC air filters – great to do often (2-4 times per year), as the longer a filter is in place, the more dirt/dust/allergens are trapped in the filter and decrease their efficiency
- Clean and inspect window screens – this will prevent pests from entering your home, as well as keep air ventilation flowing through the warmer summer months
- Check the attic, basement, and crawl space for moisture – making sure to avoid leaks now will save you costly home repairs in the future
- Check the sump pump and air conditioning system if you have one to ensure they’re in working order; clean the a/c coils and trim the brush around it outside
- Inspect the air ducts for buildup of debris, allergens or mold
- Check the washing machine water hoses to make sure they have no cracks and clean the dryer vent lint buildup out of it
Exterior Spring Maintenance To Do’s:
- Inspect and clean gutters and downspouts for damage and debris to keep water runoff diverted from your home
- Trim trees and shrubs that are near the house to prevent damage to siding, windows or the roof
- Inspect the caulking around the doors and window for wear and tear and replace if necessary
- Check over your wooden decks, railings, windowsills, and steps to be sure there are no rotting areas; repair and/or touch up the areas with paint or stain for a fresh deck
- Pressure wash around your home to make sure it’s sparkling clean for all that summer fun – wash the house siding, patios, decks, driveway, walkways, and outdoor furniture
- If you have a sprinkler system, inspect the sprinkler heads for damage from cold weather and verify the watering schedule on the control panel
- Tune up any lawn maintenance equipment that you may need, such as sharpening tools, charging batteries, and replacing old gas
- Clean debris from foundation vents and window wells
Taking the time now to tackle these tasks will keep your home running in tip top shape! Imagine getting these done and how it will feel to be on top of this spring home maintenance checklist (probably pretty good)! There are of course more tasks that could be done during the spring, but just starting with these will have you way ahead of the game. We wish you many happy summer evenings enjoying the fruits of your labor!
